After graduating with a BA in Sociology from the University of Essex and an MA in Multi-Racial Studies from the University of Sussex, Baroness Lister earned honorary doctorates from Manchester, Essex, Brighton, Lincoln and Glasgow Caledonian Universities. She is a former Director of the Child Poverty Action Group and Emeritus Professor of Social Policy at Loughborough University. In 1999, she was made a Commander of the British Empire and in 2009 was named a Fellow of the British Academy. She received the Life-Time Achievement Award from the Social Policy Association in 2010.
