‘I see a scientist, who has the same passion for discovery…’ Professor Valerie Gibson is one of the country’s leading female scientists. She is currently Head of High Energy Physics at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow and Director of Studies at Trinity College. Previously she has held a physics fellowship at CERN, a five-year SERC (now PPARC) Advanced Fellowship, the Stokes Senior Research Fellowship at Cambridge’s Pembroke College and a Leverhulme Trust Royal Society Fellowship. Valerie was the UK Spokesperson for the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in CERN during the construction and first data-taking phase. In 2013, she was awarded the Women in Science and Engineering Leader award for her work championing and encouraging female scientists. Asked who she finds inspiring, she said: ‘My two daughters and all their friends… they inspire me because they have open minds. You can tell them anything and they will take it towards the future.’
