My earliest childhood memory is of seeing my maternal, german grandfather in a poor, dimly lit space in a corrugated iron shelter. He is stripped to his waist with bandages around his body. The image I have in my memory has no real movement and no sound. It has a sadness to it and a sense of huge connection. Strange and strong. So strange that I'm not even sure it ever existed in my lifetime. I've tried to find out something about this and it seems to be a memory of a time 'before'. Writing this now prompts me to find out more!
