Meet the ambassadors: Professor Janet Todd

We’ve been itching for months to introduce you to our new ambassador, Professor Janet Todd. We’re so proud to count her as one of our supporters – and a very appropriate one at that, as she’s an internationally-renowned academic who founded the first journal devoted to women and literature. She's a scholar of the eighteenth-century Enlightenment and a pioneer of the study of early women’s writing.

Janet Todd is also the seventh President of Lucy Cavendish College – the Cambridge college that supports women of all ages who want to continue their education (you can see what happened when we met some of their students here). She’s taught all over the world, from Ghana to Puerto Rico to Scotland, and she’s published and edited nearly 40 books, the subjects of which include Mary Wollstonecraft and Aphra Behn. Most recently, she’s been focusing on the one and only Jane Austen.

Janet Todd has also found time to co-found the MA in Life-writing at the University of East Anglia, and she’s an emerita professor of the University of Aberdeen. With a list of accomplishments that long, it came as no surprise to anyone when she was rewarded for her services to higher education and literary scholarship with an OBE in 2013.

You can see Janet Todd tell her story above: lending her life experience and unique literary knowledge to a discussion of risk, childhood dreams, inspiration… and what she sees in the mirror.
