What Zombies see in the mirror: our night at the Science Museum

On the 30th January we had our very first What I See event and it couldn’t have been a more surreal start! Not only did we receive an overwhelmingly fantastic response but we also managed to film zombies answer our question of questions: ‘what do you see in the mirror?’

Now, let me divulge how we had this honour. We were fortunate enough to be part of the Science Museum Lates; an event where the museum opens its doors to over 18s for one evening a month giving adults a chance to explore the displays without kids but with the added bonus of bars, a quirky theme (hence the zombies), silent discos, quizzes, talks and now… US!! Apparently the zombies were an exploration of consciousness –and of course, an opportunity to dress up in fancy dress!

Having got to the Science Museum at the crack of dawn, fuelled with coffee, we set up our installation: two replica British phone boxes, painted white, in which people could explore the What I See website and upload their own contributions in a private space. They went down a treat – as did the low-lit room we had, full of comfy cushions to lie on, where people could watch some of the videos from women all over the world – projected onto the wall.

Being situated next to the obscenely popular ‘Launchpad’ and speed dating, we had an impressive flow of traffic throughout the evening and everyone was excitingly eager to get involved. We got some fascinating content and people really opened up; whether that was down to the wine or buzzing atmosphere, it’s hard to say.

The evening flew by and by the end we were all on such a high, having heard some amazing stories and getting such positive feedback! It was also a brilliant way to see the response to our beta website first-hand, so we can make some tweaks to improve the experience for our real website launch next month.

All in all, the evening was a huge success and just a glimpse of what’s to come for the project. Next month, we will not only have a larger set up but also some amazing speakers from the arts and science worlds. Cannot wait…
