I think it's important to test yourself against nature. What is more "test worthy" than walking on lava? I first lava-walked in graduate school, when a group of us took a field trip to Hawai'i to study volcanoes. Some years later a group of us (led by a friend named Steve (at right)) went back to an area I'd studied in graduate school to see how it had changed. The lava was still flowing. It was hot, smelly, dusty, dry, and absolutely exhilirating! Measuring yourself against nature is often like that. This image reminds me to do that more often.
